GSTIN Validator
Check whether a GST number is correctly formed: state code, embedded PAN, entity type and the checksum character.
How to use the GSTIN Validator
- Paste or type the GSTIN.
- Read whether the format and checksum are valid.
- For an invoice you'll claim credit on, also confirm the status on the GST portal.
About this tool
The 15th character of every GSTIN is calculated from the first 14, so most typos can be caught without going online. This checks structure and checksum, not whether the registration is active.
Worked example
With gstin (15 characters) of 27ABCFE1234F1ZW:
| Result | Valid format and checksum |
| State | Maharashtra |
| PAN inside the GSTIN | ABCFE1234F |
| Holder type | Firm / LLP |
| Registration number for this PAN in the state | 1 |
| Check character | W (expected W) |
This confirms the number is well-formed. To confirm it is registered and active, search it on the GST portal (services.gst.gov.in).

Questions people ask
How is a GSTIN structured?
Two-digit state code, the holder's 10-character PAN, an entity number (1–9 then A–Z for multiple registrations in a state), the letter Z by default, and a check character.
Does a valid checksum mean the GSTIN is real?
No. It means the number is well-formed. Search the GST portal to confirm it is registered and active.
