About this tool
Every unit sold contributes price minus variable cost towards fixed costs. Once those are covered, the business makes a profit.
Formula: Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost)
Worked example
With fixed costs per month: rent, salaries, emis of ₹1,50,000, selling price per unit of ₹400 and variable cost per unit of ₹250:
| Break-even units per month | 1,000 |
| Break-even sales per month | ₹4,00,000 |
| Contribution per unit | ₹150 |
