About this tool

ROI on its own ignores time. The annualised figure lets you compare a 2-year project with a 5-year one.

Formula: ROI = (returned − invested) ÷ invested; annualised = (1 + ROI)^(1/years) − 1

Worked example

With amount invested of ₹2,00,000, amount returned of ₹2,90,000 and period of 2 years:

ROI45%
Annualised return20.42%
Net gain₹90,000

Questions people ask

What is a good ROI?

It should beat what you'd earn with less risk, such as an FD or index fund, after tax.

Is ROI the same as profit margin?

No. ROI measures return on money invested; margin measures profit on sales.
