About this tool
Most education loans give a moratorium for the course plus 6–12 months. Interest still runs during that time; paying it monthly keeps the balance from growing and lowers every later EMI.
Worked example
With loan amount of ₹15,00,000, interest rate of 10.5%, moratorium (course + grace, months) of 30 months, repayment tenure of 10 years and during the moratorium of Interest builds up (added to the loan):
| EMI after moratorium | ₹25,553 |
| Interest added during moratorium | ₹3,93,750 |
| Balance when EMIs start | ₹18,93,750 |
| Total interest (incl. moratorium) | ₹15,66,398 |

Questions people ask
Is education loan interest tax deductible?
Yes. Section 80E (old regime) allows a deduction of the full interest paid, with no upper limit, for up to eight years from when repayment starts.
Is interest simple or compound during the moratorium?
Most Indian lenders charge simple interest during the moratorium and add it to the principal when EMIs begin. Check your sanction letter.
