About this tool
Personal loans are unsecured, so rates and fees vary widely between lenders. The fee is deducted from what you receive, which makes the real cost higher than the quoted rate; this calculator converts it into an effective annual cost.
Formula: EMI = P·r·(1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), r = annual rate ÷ 1200
Worked example
With loan amount of ₹5,00,000, interest rate of 12.5%, tenure of 48 months and processing fee of 2%:
| Monthly EMI | ₹13,290 |
| Total interest | ₹1,37,920 |
| Processing fee + 18% GST | ₹11,800 |
| Total you pay | ₹6,49,720 |
| Effective annual cost | 13.79% |

Questions people ask
Is GST charged on a personal loan processing fee?
Yes. GST at 18% applies to the processing fee and other charges, though not to the interest on the loan itself.
Can I prepay a personal loan?
Floating-rate loans to individuals carry no foreclosure charge under RBI rules, but most personal loans are fixed-rate and lenders may charge 2–5% for prepayment. Check the sanction letter.
